Abu Dhabi, the wealthiest emirate in the UAE, continues its tradition of heavily investing in environmental, cultural and educational innovations.

The emirate is so much more than merely the UAE's capital or Dubai's closest neighbor; home to the world's largest hand-woven carpet, the fastest roller coaster, the leaning tower, the first universal museum in the Arab World, Abu Dhabi establishes itself as a city set to lay claim on a number of world records.

As the world prepares to once again visit Abu Dhabi, the emirate is also rolling out safety rules and precautions to welcome visitors.

Here is your guide to a COVID-safe journey to Abu Dhabi, from the current prevailing measures to the upcoming lifting of quarantine for international arrivals.

Travelling to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is currently employing a green list systemto determine which travellers may enter the emirate without going through a quarantine. Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Singapore are some of the countries on the list.

Travellers from countries outside the green listmay also be granted entry but must currently adhere to more stringent safety measuresand a 10-day quarantine.

Abu Dhabi entry requirements

All foreign travellers wishing to enter Abu Dhabi must ensure that they are eligible for a visa on arrivalprior to their departure.

Other requirements include acquiring a pre-departure negative PCR test issued within 48, 72 or 96 hours before flying to Abu Dhabi depending on the country of departure.

Finally, it is also required to download and install the Al Hosn appto verify their vaccination status.

Abu Dhabi quarantine measures

Vaccinated travellers

- Fully vaccinated travellers arriving from green countries are required to take a PCR test upon arrival and once again on day six. However, they will not be subjected to quarantine.

- Fully vaccinated travellers departing from countries outside of the green list are also required to take a PCR test on arrival but will have to comply with a five-day quarantine. They must also take another PCR test on day four from arrival to Abu Dhabi.

The quarantine rules apply to all vaccinated UAE citizens and residents in Abu Dhabi who had received their second vaccine dose at least 28 days earlier as documented in the vaccine report on the Alhosn app.

Non-vaccinated travellers

- Non-vaccinated travellers departing from green list countries will not be required to quarantine but they are required to take an RT-PCR test on arrival, then on days 6 and 12 from arrival.

- Non-vaccinated travellers arriving from outside the green list will be required to serve a 10-day quarantine. Upon arrival, the medical authorities will conduct a PCR test and travellers will then need to register under the quarantine system. An electronic wristband will be issued to travellers for the duration of the 10-day quarantine.

On day eight, a second PCR test will be conducted followed by a third test on day 12 for those staying for 12 days or more. Should the traveller's test come out negative on day 10, the electronic wristband will be removed signifying the end of the quarantine.

Please note that children under 12 years and people with severe and moderate disabilities are exempt from COVID-19 PCR testing before departure.

New rules set to be implemented

The aforementioned rules, however, may soon be rendered obsolete as the Abu Dhabi authorities have announced plans to resume tourism activities in the emirate by lifting the current quarantine requirements. The new policy will be implemented on 1 July.

Among others, the new rules will mean extending the green list to cover a majority of countries and markets that Abu Dhabi is tapping into and allowing virtually everybody to visit the emirate come the first of July.
