Empowering assistant herders through human rights training and herders’ self-help groups

Overall objective

Improved labour conditions for assistant herders and realisation of their social and economic human rights

Specific objective

Assistant herders will be empowered to claim their rights, particularly their labour rights, the right to medical care, the right to education, the right to participate in society and the right to liberty and security

Expected results

  • An employment status, access to health care, social welfare of assistant herders and the right to safety of herder girls, boys and women will be defined through study;
  • The recommendations stemmed from the study findings will be introduced to the relevant stakeholders including Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Governors of selected provinces and agricultural entities;
  • Based on the study results, tailored training module will be developed;
  • Awareness raising human rights training and personal development training for assistant herders will be conducted in selected provinces of Mongolia;
  • Self-help herders' groups will be established;
  • Based on the study, one chapter on the human rights issues of herders will be included in the next 'Annual Report on Situation of Human Rights and Freedoms in Mongolia' of the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia, which will be tabled to the Parliament for its consideration.
