Have a safe, responsible and lawful ‘4/20’ by following these rules and tips

As April 20 - or "4/20" - approaches, the City's Office of Cannabis Management is issuing a friendly reminder to residents 21 and older to keep celebrations safe, responsible and lawful.

"If you're celebrating 4/20 this Saturday, please remember to do so responsibly in accordance with local and state laws," said Davina Smith, who heads up the City's Office of Cannabis Management. "Prioritize safety and stay informed about the rules so you can enjoy the festivities."

Here are some top things you should know:

1. You must be 21 or older to purchase cannabis.
You must be 21 or older to buy, possess, or use adult-use cannabis. The legal daily purchase limit is 28.5 grams of dried cannabis flower and 8 grams of concentrated cannabis, and it is illegal to give or sell adult-use cannabis to individuals under 21 years old.

2. Purchase only at permitted storefront dispensaries and delivery services.
You can find retailers near you by using this map from state's Department of Cannabis Control. Also, you can consider supporting participants in the Cannabis Reinvestment and Equity (CORE)program, created by the City of Sacramento.

3. Cannabis cannot be used in public places.
Cannabis is for private, personal use only. Typically, smoking or vaping cannabis is allowed in private residences. However, property owners and landlords have the right to prohibit cannabis use on their premises, so renters should review their rental agreements. Consumption of cannabis is not permitted in public places, areas where smoking tobacco is prohibited, or on the grounds of schools, daycare centers, or youth centers when children are present.

4. You can get a DUI for driving under the influence.
Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal and can result in a DUI, similar to alcohol. If you are suspected of being under the influence of cannabis while operating a car, boat, or other vehicle, law enforcement can pull you over and conduct a sobriety test.

5. You can have cannabis in your car but only if it's sealed.
It is against the law to have an open container of cannabis in a vehicle while driving or riding in the passenger seat. The cannabis must be in an unopened package or stored in the trunk. It is also illegal to smoke, consume, or ingest cannabis in a moving vehicle, even with a current physician's recommendation or a valid county-issued medical cannabis identification card.

6. Cannabis consumption events must be permitted by the City of Sacramento and the Department of Cannabis Control and can only take place at Cal Expo.
Events held elsewhere within the city are not permitted.

7. Report illegal activity.
Use these resources provided by the City of Sacramento to report an illegal cannabis activity.
