CMS extends special enrollment period for persons no longer eligible for Medicaid, CHIP

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services March 28 announced an extension of its temporary Marketplace special enrollment period for those who lost Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program eligibility following the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency continuous coverage period. The end date of the enrollment period is extended from July 31 to Nov. 30, 2024. In addition, CMS released new guidance on the unwinding of the continuous coverage process, tools for states, guidance for Medicaid managed care plans and resources for families no longer eligible for Medicaid or CHIP coverage.

The Department of Health and Human Services reported decreased Medicaid and CHIP enrollment compared to peak enrollment during the pandemic and released an online hub for federal resources to help people renew Medicaid or CHIP coverage, or transition to new coverage if they no longer qualify.
