Technologists and linguist named Westpac Scholars from Western Sydney University
Western Sydney University is pleased to announce that eight talented students have been awarded undergraduate scholarships by the Westpac Scholars Trust for 2022.
Adharshni Mohanbabu, Bilal Shah, Cameron Ha, Heer Thakar, Hoang Pham, Wing Tsang and Dylan Pham received Westpac Young Technologists Scholarships. While Huon Kirkman received the Asian Exchange Scholarship.
Valued at $15,000 over three years, the scholarships aim to support high potential students who are passionate about technology or cultural exchange.
Adharshni Mohanbabu, who studies a Bachelor of Computer Science and lives in Parramatta, is passionate about innovative technologies and said the scholarship will motivate her to dream bigger.
"My interest started back in my senior year when I picked Information and Software Technology as a subject. I came to Australia in 2009 and ever since Sydney has been my home. I want to contribute back to society by being part of the ever-expanding field of computer science," said Adharshni.
Support from the scholarship will help Adharshni to reach her goal of working for a leading IT or technology company to solve current global issues.
"This scholarship will open doors to a world of like-minded people that I can be a part of for life. I can be inspired, be engaged in events, find life-long friends and broaden my knowledge of the technology field."
Huon Kirkman, who studies a Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics (Japanese) and lives in Sydney, discovered a passion for languages in high school and said the scholarship is a chance to connect with a vast network of scholars.
"I have always appreciated how learning my second language, Japanese, continues to give me the opportunity to make meaningful connections with even more people. Given this, I took a particular interest in interpreting and translation, and the process of managing effective dialogue between people with different languages and cultures," said Huon.
The scholarship will allow Huon to study in Japan in the second half of 2022 as part of an exchange, where he will immerse himself in the culture and language.
"I'm currently studying towards interpreting and translation in Japanese and English, where I hope to support the effective communication between Australian and Japanese people, businesses and governments."
With a strong focus on personal and professional development, Westpac Scholars will have the opportunity take part in a Disruptive Leaders Program, which includes a five-day residential in 2023.
In addition to the financial support, they will become lifelong members of the program's alumni, the Westpac 100 Scholars Network (W100).
Western Sydney University is one of a select number of universities across Australia that partners with the Westpac Scholars Trust to award scholarships to outstanding students.
