Sembcorp Marine Record Haul of 26 Awards at National WSH Event

The strong performance is a testament to Sembcorp Marine's commitment toward WSH Excellence

Singapore, 27 July 2022: Sembcorp Marine Ltd scores 26 wins at Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards 2022! The record haul of awards follows successive years of strong performance at WSH annual event.

Organised by the WSH Council, an industry-led statutory body under the Ministry of Manpower that is supported by Tripartite Alliance Limited, the awards recognise organisations and individuals who have achieved excellence in workplace safety and health. The WSH Council works closely with the industry, unions, professionals, trade associations and other government agencies to raise WSH standards in Singapore.

The Group's wins include two WSH Performance (Silver) Awards for Sembcorp Marine's Admiralty and Pandan Yards, two WSH Awards for Supervisors and 22 SHARP (Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects) Awards for projects with good HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) performance.

Sembcorp Marine President and CEO Mr Wong Weng Sun said, "I am heartened by Sembcorp Marine's continual improvement at our national WSH Annual Awards. Good WSH performance requires all stakeholders to embrace a culture of prevention, trust and care; as well as take ownership and uphold a holistic system of clear policies, practices and procedures."

"To continue to perform well in the face of pandemic challenges and disruptions in 2022 is truly laudable. I would like to congratulate all Sembcorp Marine employees, our customers, suppliers and all who have contributed to our strong performance at WSH Awards 2022. Thank you for stepping up to our WSH commitments."

Advancing WSH Holistically

Sembcorp Marine's WSH culture is based on a 'Safety Starts with Me' philosophy with each employee taking personal ownership in upholding high HSE standards. The Group has also adopted a robust HSE integrated management system as part of its journey towards achieving its Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) 2028 Vision Zero incidence goal.

The Group implemented a series of HSE programmes to encourage proactive incident prevention including a Safety Time-out initiative. This initiative focuses on the identification and mitigation of operational risks through employees' active review, communication and validation of work processes throughout a project.

Innovation is also harnessed by the Group to drive higher WSH standards. Leveraging digital technology, the Group launched the Hazard Elimination and Communication Card System, which allows employees to actively record observations and potential risk areas through an online platform. Automation was introduced to certain work processes for enhanced safety and productivity, such as the use of robotic hydro jets for ship hull blasting works. Mobile Apps were also introduced to digitalise safety check sheets, forms and reports, resulting in reduction in paperwork and enhanced efficiency.

Drones have also been deployed for QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) Inspections. Checks and inspections can now be safely conducted in low light or dark conditions with hot spots identified from a safe distance and height. This translates to more resources being effectively deployed and faster response times.

Beyond operations, Sembcorp Marine's HSE efforts extend to employees' mental health and wellness. To this end, frontline supervisors and trade leads were provided Psychiatric First Aid Training by a counsellor accredited by the Health Promotion Board to equip them with skills to recognise early warning signs of mental health conditions. This has enabled them to render timely support and better assist their co-workers to reach out for professional support.

The Group also organised and supported numerous engagement activities for our migrant work force to promote mental wellness and social bonding. These activities included excursions and festive giveaways. As a further demonstration of care for the wellbeing of the migrant workers, Sembcorp Marine partnered the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) to roll out the "Marine Migrant Workers Mental Health Challenge". The month-long campaign raised funds for 5,000 care packs - which included essential items such as surgical masks, hand sanitisers, dental kits, shower essentials, and snacks - for distribution to marine migrant workers in Singapore.
