New mobile harbour cranes load first dedicated container vessel

Port of Newcastle has marked another milestone in its diversification agenda, with the loading of the first dedicated container vessel by its two mobile harbour cranes.

The 1700 TEU ANL Dhambi arrived at the Port's Mayfield 4 berth on Thursday 10 November where it was loaded with various containerised cargo bound for Singapore, including aluminium, wheat, steel, meat and scrap metal.

The milestone marks the first time the two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes have been used on a dedicated container vessel, following their arrival and formal commissioning in October.

ANL Dhambi's arrival coincided with the passing of the Port of Newcastle Extinguishment of Liability Bill in the NSW upper house, which will allow for the development of a Newcastle Deepwater Container Terminal.

The Port is currently investing $60 million to establish an expanded Multi-Purpose Cargo Handling Facility at its Mayfield 4 berth, which includes an additional 11,800m2 of hardstand storage, road and service upgrades.

Stage two will involve extending the berth to accommodate for larger container vessels.
