A Celebration of CPI/TRIO Students and Staff

LIVONIA, MICH. - Madonna University's annual Center for Personalized Instruction (CPI) and TRIO Student Awards and Recognition Ceremony took place April 19th in the Franciscan Gathering Space. The ceremony celebrated over 40 years of the TRIO Student Support Services program, and shined a spotlight on the personalized academic support the program provides students on their academic journey.

The atmosphere was one of gratitude and recognition, as Dr. Chris Benson, Interim Director of TRIO, and vice president for Student Affairs and Mission Integration, expressed the significance of the program for students at Madonna. "To me, the TRIO program is all about supporting students in achieving their dreams," Dr. Benson shared. "Just being able to witness their success is what keeps me at Madonna. I choose to be here; I want to be here. It's a fantastic program, and I'm grateful to be a part of it."

TRIO Alumna and Graduate Assistant Nekold Jones shared an inspiring excerpt about unity, from her first-place winning MLK Essay.

As the ceremony progressed, CPI/TRIO student staff members were acknowledged for their invaluable contributions. The dedication of these individuals to providing financial aid assistance, academic tutoring, and emotional support showed how community-focused the CPI and TRIO programs are.

Veronica Riha, professor of biology, was honored as the SPARCS Mentor of the Year, and Cierra Sutherland, director of career development, was honored as the TRIO Staff Champion.

Dr. Benson also thanked Mary Philimona, a 2023 criminal justice alumna and CPI/TRIO graduate assistant, for her work in supporting Madonna students.

Bobby Martin, a graduating senior in TRIO and legacy award winner, emphasized the role of support in his academic journey. "TRIO is a helping hand, an outlet, and provides grants - a welcoming environment with the staff. I would recommend TRIO one hundred percent."

The ceremony continued with a series of awards celebrating outstanding achievements among TRIO students, honoring rising stars, legacy builders, and those who exemplified the spirit of engagement and leadership within the community.

The CPI and TRIO programs continue to inspire and uplift, leaving a lasting impression of all who are a part of them.
