Western Cape police arrest several suspects during weekend operations

WESTERN CAPEc-cSeveral firearms and an assortment of ammunition have been recovered in several operations in the Western Cape on 13 May 2022. These integrated operations have been successful in terms of recovering firearms and arresting the perpetrators.

Intelligence driven operations in Durbanville and a farm in the Kouebokke Veldt landed two suspects behind bars for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Friday, 13 May 2022.

The members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence and FLASH executed search warrants at these premises and found firearms such as shotguns, revolvers, pistols and ammunition. Two males aged 43 and 45 were arrested at the respective premises.

Once charged the suspects will appear in the Blue Downs and Ceres Magistrates courts respectively on the mentioned charges.

On a farm near Philadelphia area SAPS members found ten boxes containing dagga, fifty dagga plants, two scales, three fans, and other equipment been used for producing of cannabis. An undisclosed amount of cash, one shotgun and two rifles, 86 rounds and three cartridges were seized. The street value of the dagga is yet to be established.

Two suspects a female aged 56 and male aged 47 were arrested for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and dagga. They will appear at Atlantis Magistrate Court on Monday 16 May 2022.

In an unrelated matter on Friday, 13 May 2022 at about 23:45, Delft SAPS members arrested a 23 year old male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Delft Main Road. Delft SAPS members performing patrols in the area observed the suspect acting suspiciously when they spotted him. They then conducted a stop-and-search operation and the suspect was found in possession of a .38 Special revolver with five rounds. The suspect, who resides in Modder Street in Leiden, Delft, was arrested.

Members attached to Gansbaai SAPS arrested two suspects aged 19 and 23 for possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition on Friday, 13 May 2022 at about 21:00 in Kappertjie Street, Blom Park, Gansbaai. The members noticed a commotion at the said address and witnessed a suspect running from the scene. They apprehended the suspect and the next minute another suspect came running out and had a firearm in his hand. According to the one with the firearm, the suspect who ran out first wanted to shoot him and he hustled the firearm from his possession. Both suspects were arrested by police. A 9mm pistol without a serial number was confiscated. The suspects will appear in the Hermanus Magistrates court on Monday, 16 May 2022, on the mentioned charges.

Meanwhile our detectives were hard at work and arrested 623 wanted suspects who found themselves on the wrong side of the law on charges related to murder, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, house robbery, burglary, sexual offences and possession of drugs.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile commended the unrelenting efforts of all police officers involved in these operations in ensuring that unlicensed firearms and ammunition are removed from the streets.
