CATIE: an ally in the sustainable management and conservation of forests

  • With our work in forestry we meet the needs of the countries of the region in the area of forestry in order to improve human well-being

From CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), through research and education, we seek to contribute to the territorial management, conservation and sustainable management of forests in Latin America so that the region can benefit from the multiple goods and services offered by these landscapes, especially to the populations.

With our work in forestry, we meet the needs of the countries of the region in the area of forestry in order to improve human well-being, and in this way we have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Latin America. In addition by developing integrated research at different levels, we have been able to make a decisive contribution in the region on issues of protected areas, biological corridors and sustainable forest management.

We do this under four lines of work:

  • Participatory governance of territories; includes Model Forests, protected areas and biological corridors, allows different groups of society to participate in the planning and implementation of various activities related to the management of natural resources in territories with a diversity of land use.
  • Diversified forest management with emphasis on value chains for timber and non-timber products, as well as permanent income generation, with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the production of forest goods and services in ways that benefit the local population. An example of this work is Activa CATIE, an innovation and entrepreneurship laboratory that was recently created for rural development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Biodiversity conservation. In this sense, we conduct research, training and technical cooperation with local, national and international partners in order to generate knowledge and increase capacities for the design of management systems and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services under a systemic, participatory and adaptive approach. In this way, we hope to enhance the benefits generated from biodiversity conservation to local communities and society in general. Through the GEOCATIE platform we have available information on this subject, as well as work stories on topics such as blue carbon, biodiversity in urban areas and others.
  • Restoration of forest landscapes; understood as a process of integration of diverse social stakeholders to improve the management of natural resources, focused on recovering essential ecosystem functions and services for human well-being. An example of this is the publication, Restoration of forest landscapes. Manual for training of trainers, developed to strengthen the capacities of officials of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC, its Spanish acronym) of Costa Rica.

CATIE is an academic center for innovation and sustainable development in topics related to agriculture, management, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Our area of influence, by mandate, is the Latin American and the Caribbean region. In our actions we combine education, research and external projection to promote Inclusive Green Development, with the aim of increasing human welfare and reducing rural poverty. We are leaders in the integrated management of agriculture and natural resources to address global challenges.
