CDOT to replace two timber bridges in eastern Arapahoe County starting in mid-July

The Colorado Department of Transportation will replace two timber bridges in eastern Arapahoe County on U.S. 40 near Peoria Road and Deer Trail starting in mid-July. Full highway closures are necessary for bridge demolition and replacement as both concrete bridges will be constructed at the same time.

The first bridge is about one mile west of Peoria Road. The second bridge is one mile west of Ivy Street just outside of Deer Trail. Both bridges will be closed through October. Access to the Richmil Ranch Open Space will be maintained from the west during construction.

During the closures, local detours will be in place, as Interstate-70 will be the primary detour route. Message boards placed on U.S. 40 will provide closure date information to motorists.

The work is part of an $11 million project that CDOT started earlier this year with the replacement of two other timber bridges-U.S. 36 between Strasburg and Byers, and U.S. 40 near Agate.

Both bridges were recently replaced with concrete bridges and are anticipated to open in July as crews complete asphalt paving and other finishing work.

The work at all four sites include new pavement approaching the bridges, shoulders widened to eight feet across each bridge, new guardrail, drainage improvements, access modifications and upgraded signage and striping.
