Flushing, Saginaw Fire Departments Receive Federal Grants to Upgrade Lifesaving Equipment
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced that two mid-Michigan fire departments will receive $345,199 in federal grants to support local first responders and upgrade critical equipment to protect firefighters.
The Flushing Fire Department will receive $274,472 and the Saginaw Fire Department will receive $70,472. The federal grant, through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, will help to replace old firefighting equipment and air tanks for firefighters.

The men and women at the Flushing and Saginaw Fire Departments work every day to keep our communities safe, and it is important that they have the necessary protective equipment to keep them safe. These federal grants will help our local fire departments remain prepared to respond to emergencies. I look forward to continuing to work with our first responders to promote public safety,' said Congressman Kildee.
Since coming to Congress, Kildee has been a champion for mid-Michigan communities to receive federal grants to assist with public safety. In 2017, Congressman Kildee secured $267,069 in federal funds to replace old firefighting equipment and protective gear for firefighters in Flint. The year before, Congressman Kildee helped to secure a $3.7 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant for Flint.
Eligible fire departments can apply for federal AFG and SAFER grants. These competitive grants provide money to guarantee departments are appropriately staffed with qualified professional and volunteer firefighters. More information about the grant can be found by clicking here.
