During Farm Safety Week Agriculture Secretary Urges Driver Awareness; New Allowances for Farm Implements on Roadways in Effect
Harrisburg, PA - In recognition of National Farm Safety Week, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding urged extra caution on Pennsylvania roads, and reminded farmers of newly loosened restrictions on farm implement width.
'Pennsylvania's 53,000 farm families feed our world and feed our economy,' Secretary Redding said. 'During this harvest season, drivers should be particularly alert, and patient as farm implements may be on the roads. New loosened restrictions are good for agriculture businesses, and what's good for agriculture is good for Pennsylvania.'
On August 28, the increased allowable width for farm implements on the roads, made possible by the PA Farm Bill, took effect. The allowable width increased from 16 to 18 feet.
In addition, drivers must have liability insurance. They may only travel within 50 miles of any farm operated by the owner; between farms; or between farm and mechanic or dealer within 150 miles of the farm for sale or repair, with five days' notice to PennDOT, except in cases of emergency repairs. Implements must be preceded by a pilot vehicle displaying an 'oversize load' sign and activated hazard lights. Vehicles must have at least one revolving yellow light or strobe light with 360º visibility.
Between sunset and sunrise, these additional restrictions apply:
The PA Farm Bill, a historic piece of bipartisan piece of legislation Governor Tom Wolf signed in July, reduces regulatory burdens on farms, improves the business climate for agriculture and food businesses, and provides vital resources to support industry growth and vitality.
