Coyotes spoil Trojans' baseball season-opening twin-bill

TOPEKA, Kan. - Dakota State (S.D.) took the first lead over Kansas Wesleyan in the first game of the season-opening baseball doubleheader at a chilly Bettis Family Complex. The Coyotes spoiled the Trojans' season-opening twin-bill by the scores of 15-6 and 7-1.

DSU is 0-2 overall record. KWU earned their third straight win, improving to 3-5 overall record.

Both teams finish off their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game at 11 a.m.

Game 1 - Kansas Wesleyan 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 - FINAL

Both teams were unable to score in the first inning, despite leaving bases full.

DSU took the first lead of the game in the top second frame. Adrian Butrimas was hit-by-pitch with one out. Jerrett Plunkett blasted a 2-run home run to left field (his first home run at DSU) and scored Micha DeHarty (courtesy runner for Butrimas) to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

The Coyotes answered back with four runs scored in the bottom half of the second inning, highlighted by Yodai Nakamura's 2-RBI single to give KWU a 4-2 lead over DSU.

Dakota State added a run in the top third inning. Tanner Landman reached on base by a walk with one out. Marcos Alvarez hit a ground out to third base and advanced Landman to second base. Chris Burke produced an RBI single to score Landman as the Trojans trim the Coyotes' lead to 4-3.

Kealen Martin hit an RBI single and Dalton Whitaker added a 2-RBI single to produce a 3-run fourth inning, extending KWU's lead to 7-3.

Chris Kropuenske and Landman each hit back-to-back singles to kick off the top fifth frame for the Trojans. Alvarez followed up with an RBI single to score Kropuenske as DSU trailed 7-4.

Kansas Wesleyan produced three runs in the bottom fifth, caused by three defensive miscues by DSU. The Coyotes ballooned their lead to 10-4 by the end of the fifth inning.

With bases loaded situation in the top sixth inning, Landman recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch to score Plunkett (who opened the inning with a walk). DSU cut KWU's lead to 10-5.

The Coyotes made it 15-5 after plating five runs in the bottom sixth.

Plunkett hit a two-out single in the top seventh inning for the Trojans. Jalen Boyd followed up with an RBI double to score Plunkett, trailing 15-6. DSU left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the win for KWU.

Boyd was 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and drove in a run for Dakota State. Plunkett added a home run, single and two RBIs. He scored three times. Landman, Alvarez and Burke each had a hit and registered an RBI. Burke swiped one base. Samuel Drummond had a single.

Martin was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and produced two RBIs for Kansas Wesleyan. Whitaker added two singles and two RBIs. Tanner Nelson added three hits and two RBIs. Bailey Watros and James Richey each had a hit and an RBI.

Dakota State left 12 runners on base compared to Kansas Wesleyan nine runners left on base. KWU outhit DSU 14-10. The Trojans committed six defensive errors compared to the Coyotes two errors.

Burke (L, 0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He worked for two innings and allowed four runs on four hits. The Trojans used four different pitchers in relief-Steven Suarez, Trey Randel, Andrew Dayton and Justin Butler.

Jake Olofson (W, 2-0) earned the win after pitching four innings for KWU. He gave up four runs on seven hits and recorded seven strikeouts. Benjamin Jackson, Kaden Sitzman and Cody Peepgrass each worked in relief for the Coyotes.

Game 2 - Kansas Wesleyan 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 - FINAL

Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs in the bottom second inning, highlighted by Craig Bettis' 2-RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

The Trojans ended their scoring run in the top fourth inning. Boyd led off with a single. Drummond drilled an RBI double to score Boyd as DSU trailed 3-1.

KWU scored a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning caused by DSU's defensive miscue, extending their lead to 4-1.

Kansas Wesleyan made it 7-1 after scoring three runs in the bottom sixth inning.

The Trojans could not convert their scoring chance in the final inning as the Coyotes secured a doubleheader sweep.

Drummond had a double and an RBI for Dakota State. Boyd, Plunkett and Alvarez each added a hit.

Bettis led the Coyotes' offense attack with a double, single and drove in three runs. Josh Grubaugh had two singles. Watros and Alex Sarmienta each recorded a single and an RBI. Martin and Jeffrey Cochran each had a hit.

KWU outhit DSU 8-4 in the game. The Coyotes had four runners left on base while the Trojans left three runners on base.

Adam Berryhill (L, 0-1) tossed a complete game despite the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He allowed seven runs (four unearned) on eight hits. He struck out three KWU's batters.

Jakob Sandoval (W, 1-1) earned a completed game victory for Kansas Wesleyan. He limited the Trojans to one run on four hits and struck out seven batters.
