‘Happy’ Shoreham children’s home praised by Ofsted

Release date: 31 May 2022

Breakwater is the latest West Sussex children's home to be praised by Ofsted.

The home in Shoreham, run by West Sussex County Council, has just been rated 'Good' following an inspection in February. Breakwater only reopened last year following extensive refurbishment and its good rating is the highest it could have achieved as a newly registered home.

It continues the hugely positive run of Ofsted results after four West Sussex homes were recently awarded the top 'Outstanding' rating. This latest success means that all of the County Council's children's homes are rated Outstanding or Good.

Jacquie Russell, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "Congratulations to Breakwater staff for this fantastic achievement which continues our incredible run of top Ofsted ratings. We are investing to refurbish all of our children's homes to ensure that vulnerable children across the county receive the care and support that they need to thrive."

Breakwater is a six-bedroom home for children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

The Ofsted report found: "Children's progress is positive, and relationships are forming between children and a growing staff team. The home has recently opened and offers children the opportunity to see their families and friends, and to enjoy activities and new experiences that improve their independence skills. Children are happy, settled and optimistic about their futures. All children told the inspector that they enjoyed living there."

The report also found that 'parents and professionals are positive about the role staff and the manager play in the children's lives'. One parent told inspectors: "This place has been amazing for (my child). They have settled and staff have been brilliant."

As a result of the exciting expansion of our residential services, there are opportunities for people to work in our homes across the Worthing, Shoreham, Crawley and Haywards Heath areas.
