Hastings’ Statement on Mass Shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the mass shootings that killed 49 people in a terrorist attack at two mosques in central Christchurch, New Zealand:

'The shootings at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand during the Friday prayer represent an unconscionable act of terrorism. I am filled with sorrow and horror at the loss of 49 lives, and the injuries sustained by at least 48 people, including young children.

'I wholeheartedly condemn this unprecedented act of violence and all forms of Islamophobia. This attack, and the vile white nationalist rhetoric it was motivated by, have absolutely no place in the world. I offer my deepest condolences to the Christchurch community and to the people of New Zealand during this time of tremendous sadness.'

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
