Karron Skog Elevated to Assistant Managing Editor

When it comes to getting our best journalism before large numbers of readers, few play a bigger role than Karron Skog.

As the editor overseeing the programming of the report across our on-platform digital surfaces, Karron helps to prioritize our best journalism and create a vibrant experience that keeps readers coming back for more. Overseeing the home team for the past four years as an associate managing editor, she's worked to make our home screen more dynamic by prominently featuring visuals and our reporters' on-the-scene insights. And she's been a key player in our efforts to determine the ideal programming experience for our rapidly growing international audience.

To acknowledge her critical and ever-expanding role, we'd like to announce Karron's elevation as the new assistant managing editor for programming. In the new position, Karron will oversee and shape the continued evolution of programming on the home screen and on other digital surfaces.

She will also have an enhanced role working with our product partners in developing new programming tools and showcasing the broader offerings from audio and from our partners at Cooking, Wirecutter, Games and The Athletic.

Karron joined The Times in 2005 as a copy editor on the National desk and later became editor of the news desk and editorial director of Smarter Living. She's been a key part of major newsroom strategy efforts, serving as a lead author of a seminal audience study in 2015 and a member of the 2020 Committee, which issued a sweeping report on how to modernize The Times newsroom.

She joined us from The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., where she was the news editor and a colleague of Mike Abrams, now the Director of Journalism Practices and Principles at The Times.

"Almost from the moment I met Karron all those years ago in Virginia, it was clear that she possessed a rare blend: unshowy intellect, tremendous empathy, a world-class B.S. detector and a sharp sense of humor," Mike said. "She has been a trusted editor at every level at The Times."

She is also a collaborative editor who works well with teams across The Times. In her new role, she will serve as the primary partner for product when it comes to programming and related tools, and will support the broader newsroom and news report as part of the leadership team of the newsroom. She will report to Marc Lacey.

Please join us in congratulating Karron on this well-deserved promotion.
