Road Construction Updates

As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 150 active work zones within the city.

Traffic engineering staff do make an effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Please be patient, slow down and respect the workers and equipment required to maintain well-functioning infrastructure in the city.

Changes coming to I-70: Improvements recommended at I-70/Airpark and I-70/Watkins interchanges

The area in Arapahoe and Adams counties surrounding the interchanges at I-70/Airpark and I-70/Watkins Road is planned for substantial new development. Arapahoe County is leading a study to proactively identify recommended improvements at each interchange to meet future travel demands.

Following detailed forecasting of future traffic volumes and patterns, interchange design alternatives were developed and evaluated. The study is now nearly complete, and recommendations were presented at an Aug. 25 virtual public meeting (visit the project webpage to replay the meeting). Improvements at each interchange would likely be constructed in phases to provide adequate traffic operations as the area continues to grow.

Improvements recommended by this initial study will next need to be evaluated in a formal environmental clearance process before final design and construction can begin. Timing of construction is uncertain since funding for these next steps has not yet been identified. Current projections of area development show initial phases of improvements could be necessary before 2025. Arapahoe County is actively working with local partners to create a funding plan.
