Man To Be Charged With Dangerous Driving Causing Death And Other Related Driving Offences

On 22 April 2024 at about 7.05am, the Police were alerted to an accident involving four cars, a van and a minibus at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 4. A 17-year-old female car passenger and a 57-year-old female van passenger were conveyed unconscious to the hospital, where they subsequently passed away. In addition, three male car drivers, aged between 42 and 48, a 64-year-old male van driver, an 11-year-old male car passenger and an 11-year-old male minibus passenger were conveyed conscious to the hospital. A 42-year-old female car driver and a 39-year-old male van passenger later sought medical attention at the hospital on their own. The 42-year-old male car driver, who was conveyed to the hospital, was subsequently discharged from the hospital on 24 April 2024 and arrested on the same day. His driving licence has also been suspended with immediate effect.

The man will be charged in court on 25 April 2024 with the following offences:

  1. Dangerous driving causing death under Section 64(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;

  2. Dangerous driving causing hurt under Section 64(2B)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;

  3. Dangerous driving under Section 64(2C)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and

  4. Failing to stop after an accident under Section 84(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.

Investigations are ongoing for other potential offences.

The offence of dangerous driving causing death carries an imprisonment term of not less than two years and not more than eight years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles. The offence of dangerous driving causing hurt carries a fine of up to $10,000, or imprisonment term of up to two years, or both; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles. The offence of dangerous driving carries a fine of up to $5,000, or imprisonment term of up to 12 months, or both. The offence of failing to stop after an accident carries a fine of up to $1,000, or imprisonment term of up three months; or both for each of the offences.

Motorists should always abide by traffic rules to keep our roads safe for everyone. The Police will not hesitate to bring motorists who commit egregious traffic offences and endanger the safety of other road users to justice.
