HDR Expert Shares How to Assess Today’s Intelligent Transportation Technology

HDR's latest installation of its Experts Talk series features Pete Marshall, P.E., PTOE, discussing how to evaluate the new technologies and data streams becoming available in intelligent transportation systems.
A wealth of data sources are coming online from sources like smartphones and connected vehicles, adding information to agencies' existing traffic management systems. But with limited resources, agencies need to prioritize.
Marshall describes strategies to leverage existing and new ITS technologies to analyze traffic systems and to automate and streamline traffic management tasks. He offers tips for agencies evaluating new technologies and data sources, including four questions that transportation leaders can ask before adopting new options:
- Is the technology clearly aimed at a problem that needs solving?
- Is it mature enough?
- Are other agencies trying it?
- Can you test it in a pilot program or other incremental use?
Marshall is our ITS technology program development lead. He has managed large, complex ITS programs to integrate vehicles, system users and infrastructure. His recent work focuses on ITS systems and their interaction with connected vehicle solutions and emerging data sources.
