Shoreline restoration project named one of nation's best

Cardno's natural resources team helped design the living shoreline used at Sassafras Landing, a project recently named one of 2021's Best Restored Shores by the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA).

Cardno assisted in the planning, design, and construction of a living shoreline in a Delaware wildlife management area, culminating in the planting of nearly 5,200 plugs of native marsh grass to help complete the project in 2019. Now in its third season, the new shoreline continues to benefit and protect a variety of ecologically important natural resources.

Cardno staff provided services on the project in consultation with fellow scientists and engineers from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.

Senior Consultant Chris Pfeifer - "We're proud of the part we played to help restore this shoreline to a more natural form and function. Our team understands the challenges and long-term needs involved with shoreline stabilization and erosion control to increase coastal resiliency."

The ASPBA established its Best Restored Shores awards program to recognize and encourage more effective coastal risk management that restores natural infrastructure to address growing erosion, flooding, and related hazards associated with increased storm severity and/or sea level rise.
