Official talks between the Romanian and South-Korean Defence Ministers

Minister of National Defence, Vasile Dîncu, pays an official visit to the Republic of Korea over 22-25 September. On this occasion, the Romanian dignitary had a meeting with his South-Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-Sup, on 23 September.

During the bilateral talks which mainly focused on the development of the military cooperation relations between Romania and the Republic of Korea, the two defence ministers signed a Letter of Intention which set up the reference marks of an Agreement Defence Cooperation.

Also, the meeting agenda of the two officials included topics referring to the international security situation, with focus on the security challenges posed to the Black Sea region, respectively Asia-Pacific and the status and perspectives of cooperation consolidation within the international organizations, the framework being ensured by the Republic of Korea' status as a North-Atlantic Alliance global partner.

In this context, the Romanian defence minister emphasized the importance of the participation of the Asia-Pacific partners in a NATO Summit and pointed out the relevance of the decision adopted at Madrid with regard to the increase of political dialogue and practical cooperation with the NATO partners recognized in this region, including South-Korea, for the promotion of security through cooperation and the support provided to rule-based international order.

At bilateral level, the two officials agreed to increase cooperation in the field of military education, cybernetic defence and joint training. Moreover, the dignitaries assessed the possibility of enhancing cooperation with a view of developing new technologies, including the know-how transfer, taking into consideration the possibility of manufacturing military equipment in Romania.

At the end of talks, the two officials agreed upon continuing dialogue with a view of expanding the current legal framework which should provide for the premises of the consolidation of bilateral defence cooperation.
