O'AHU - Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation are proud to host the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships at the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center (VMAC)!

Known as Junior Pan Pac, this quadrennial, international meet boasts top teenage swimmers hailing from nations around the Pacific, including: Australia, Canada, Cooke Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, Samoa, Singapore, and the United States. An estimated 227 swimmers from 13 to 18 years old will participate in Junior Pan Pac, with competition slated to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The public is invited to view the acclaimed competition in-person or via a televised feed sponsored by USA Swimming on their website usaswimming.org . The regular public swim schedule at VMAC will be suspended today, Wednesday, Aug. 17, resume tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 18, and be suspended from Friday, Aug. 19 through Sunday, Aug.28 (Statehood holiday, event preparations, and competition). The pool is scheduled to resume regular public operations on Monday, Aug. 29.

The K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center is the newest pool facility operated by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation. Located in the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park, the 50-meter pool and diving facility was named after late Hawai'i Congressmember K. Mark Takai in summer 2017. A proud husband and father of two, Takai also served in the Hawai'i Army National Guard and was a championship swimmer for the University of Hawai'i Mānoa.

The hosting of Junior Pan Pac at this pool facility continues the pool's tradition of hosting world-class events and aquatics clubs, most recently serving as a practice facility for the men's national water polo teams from the United States and Australia before their competition in the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The Junior Pan Pac was previously scheduled to take place in 2021 before being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was last hosted by Japan in Fiji in 2018.
