Smith Statement on the Retirement of Congressman Jim Cooper

SEATTLE, WA - Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after Representative Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) announced that he will retire at the end of the 117th Congress following over thirty years of service in the House of Representatives.

"Congressman Jim Cooper has served our country, our service members and their families, and the people of Tennessee faithfully as a Member of Congress and as a valued member of the House Armed Services Committee. Through his steady leadership and civility, Congressman Cooper has brought thoughtful, pragmatic solutions to some of the biggest national security challenges facing the United States.

"As Chair of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Congressman Cooper has played a key role in helping ensure the United States meets future threats, especially in space. The subcommittee he leads is responsible for shaping a range of important, sometimes contentious policy issues, and Congressman Cooper's measured approach and commitment to reasonable debate and rational discussion has been incredibly valuable to the work of the Committee.

"I cannot thank Congressman Cooper enough for his years of service to the American people as a Member of Congress and as a trusted voice on the Committee. Even as we will certainly miss Jim in Congress, we all wish him and his loved ones the best as he enters a new chapter."
