Music Academy of the West Brings Live Music Back to America’s Riviera This Summer, with Six Weeks of In-Person Events Featuring Michael Tilson Thomas, Marin Alsop, Tyshawn[...]

The Music Academy of the West brings back the restorative power of live music this summer, with more than 70 events for in-person audiences in scenic Santa Barbara (July 5-Aug 14). In the fourth season of a momentous partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra, LSO Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas leads two programs that mark his long-awaited Academy Festival Orchestra debut. The orchestra also performs under the leadership of returning favorite Larry Rachleff and MacArthur Award-winner Marin Alsop, who conducts the annual Community Concerts. In the first summer of an ongoing collaboration with the Academy, Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) presents the vocal fellows in two inventive filmed productions, Mirrorflores and 21C Liederabend, op. MAW, which will screen before a live audience. In a keynote address at the Innovation Institute, which offers invaluable career training, Chineke! Founder Chi-chi Nwanoku will share her vision for positive change in the post-pandemic classical world. The winners of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition will premiere a new commission from Carlos Simon, and the winners of the Duo and Solo Piano Competitions will premiere new commissions from Tyshawn Sorey and Conrad Tao, two of this year's Mosher Guest Artists, who also include Sasha Cooke and Steven Isserlis. Other highlights include a festive Opening Night Gala, a wealth of public masterclasses, and the new x2 Series, which pairs fellows and teaching artists in side-by-side chamber concerts. All those who virtually attended MARLI, the 2020 Music Academy Remote Learning Institute, have been invited back to participate in person this summer, which promises to provide the truly transformative experiences of artistic and personal growth for which Music Academy of the West is rightly known.

More than 100 fellows on full scholarship will join more than 65 teaching artists on the Academy's oceanside campus, Miraflores. Seventy live, public events are scheduled at the Granada Theatre, Lehmann Hall and Hahn Hall, where the recording and lighting systems have undergone major upgrades, allowing concerts to be recorded and broadcast at the highest industry standards. Most events will be between 60 and 75 minutes long, with no intermission, and several will be filmed and streamed online free of charge, offering worldwide access.

LSO partnership: Michael Tilson Thomas's festival debut

The Academy continues its groundbreaking multi-season partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), a world leader in innovation, management and international presence. This summer, Michael Tilson Thomas - Conductor Laureate of the LSO, Signature Festival Conductor of the Academy's LSO partnership, Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony, and Founder and Artistic Director of the New World Symphony - makes his official festival debut with a two-week residency. Having previously been forced to postpone, first for his own health and then by the pandemic, now the eleven-time Grammy-winner conducts the Academy Festival Orchestra in two programs at the Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara. The first combines two examples of German late-Romanticism - Wagner's Siegfried Idyll and Brahms's Second Serenade - with Patterns by William Grant Still, the first African-American composer to have a symphony performed by a major U.S. orchestra (July 17). For his second appearance, Tilson Thomas leads an all-American program comprising his own Street Song for symphonic brass, Copland's Appalachian Spring and Ives's Three Places in New England (July 31). The two-week residency also sees Tilson Thomas conduct a vocal masterclass (July 28).

Other members of the LSO will be on hand remotely to mentor the fellows in virtual private lessons and coaching sessions, as well as adjudicating the Keston Music Academy Exchange (Keston MAX) auditions to determine which fellows will have the chance to perform with the LSO and its Music Director, Sir Simon Rattle.

Marin Alsop, Larry Rachleff and the Academy Festival Orchestra

The Academy Festival Orchestra performs two further programs at the Granada Theatre this summer. Larry Rachleff, Professor of Orchestral Conducting at Rice University and 'a take-charge maestro who invests everything he conducts with deep musical understanding' (Chicago Tribune), returns to launch the season with Punch, a fanfare for brass ensemble by Australia's Katy Abbott, and works by Mozart and Stravinsky (July 11).

Underscoring the Academy's continued commitment to community access, the annual Community Concerts will be led by Marin Alsop, who has just concluded an outstanding 14-year tenure as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and currently serves as Chief Conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, as first Music Director of the University of Maryland's National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F), and as first Chief Conductor and Curator of Chicago's Ravinia Festival, where she curates and conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's summer residencies. She and the orchestra draw the summer to a close with two performances of Ginastera's Variaciones Concertantes, Beethoven's exuberant Seventh Symphony and Joan Tower's Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, a work dedicated to Alsop herself (Aug 7).

Beth Morrison Projects and the Vocal Institute

The Academy recently launched a new affiliation with Beth Morrison Projects (BMP), an industry disruptor and tastemaker at the forefront of musical and theatrical innovation. Both the company's President and Creative Producer, Beth Morrison - Musical America's 2021 Artist of the Year - and its Executive Director, Jecca Barry, will be in residence for four weeks this summer. Under their expert guidance, the singers and vocal pianists of the Academy's Vocal Institute will take part in two filmed productions.

Curated and directed by Morrison in collaboration with BMP composer-in-residence Paola Prestini, the first of these is 21c Liederabend, op. MAW, a customized take on BMP's signature re-imagining of the traditional art song recital. Offering an immersion in 21st-century song, the innovative format represents 'a succinct definition of just what song is: a personal utterance with global reach and universal impact' (New York Times). Conducted by Daniela Candillari, the Academy's edition will feature the vocal fellows in songs by some of today's foremost female composers, including Gabriela Lena Frank, Missy Mazzoli, Ellen Reid, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Du Yun and Prestini herself. The film will receive its world premiere screening before a live audience in Hahn Hall (July 23).

In a purposeful play on Miraflores, the name given to the Academy's idyllic nine-acre campus, BMP will also collaborate with Vocal Institute Creative Director James Darrah to present the vocal fellows in Mirrorflores, a series of opera scenes exploring new ways of delivering opera though the cinematic lens. The finished film will premiere on the Academy's website (Aug 14).

Chi-chi Nwanoku and the Innovation Institute

Building on the success of the 2020 Music Academy Remote Learning Institute (MARLI), the Academy's Innovation Institute supports alumni entrepreneurship at a level unmatched by any other top-tier performing arts organization. The Opening Convocation address will be delivered by Keynote Speaker Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, the founder of Chineke!, Europe's first majority Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical orchestra. Her powerful and inspiring vision of what the pandemic can teach the classical world and society at large will be available to the public in this summer's online Innovation Highlights.

To help the fellows make rewarding and sustainable careers, the Institute offers a wealth of interactive seminars. Among many others, speakers will include Afton Battle, General Director of Fort Worth Opera; Cuban-American soprano Lisette Oropesa, whose honors include both the Richard Tucker Award and the Metropolitan Opera's Beverly Sills Award; and Nick Luby and Susan Zhang, pianists and founders of The Concert Truck, a mobile music venue that redefines the concert experience, making music accessible to all.

The fellows will have the opportunity to create solo and small-ensemble recordings at a new Technology Resource Hub, and will use the technology packages developed for MARLI to create their own original digital content for submission to this year's Fast Pitch Awards and Digital Challenge. They will also receive one-on-one guidance in communicating with their audiences, whether through public speaking or written program notes, from mentors at Project Resonance, the Academy's new initiative in association with the University of California Santa Barbara Department of Music.

Mosher Guest Artist Recitals & New Commissions: Tao, Cooke, Isserlis, Sorey & Simon

Each year, several distinguished Mosher Guest Artists are selected to share their extraordinary talent with the Academy's fellows and audiences. This summer's incumbents are pianist-composer Conrad Tao, who will be in residence in person, and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, cellist Steven Isserlis and composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey, all of whom will attend the festival remotely.

The recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Gilmore Young Artist award, Conrad Tao is 'shaping the future of classical music' (New York). He teaches a live masterclass (Aug 2); gives a live recital of Schumann's Kreisleriana, John Adams's China Gates and Jason Eckardt's Echoes' White Veil (Aug 3); and has been commissioned to write a new piece for premiere by the Duo Competition winners.

Filmed recitals by the other Mosher Guest Artists will receive premiere screenings before live festival audiences. Music Academy alumna and two-time Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke (2002) joins pianist Kirill Kuzmin for works by Debussy, Berlioz, Rossini, Copland and Kamala Sankaram (screening July 21). Revered British cellist Steven Isserlis, whose honors include the Piatigorsky Prize, Schumann Prize and Commander of the British Empire, plays solo suites by Bach and Bloch before joining pianist Sophia Rahman for Dvořák (screening July 15). A composer, improviser, conductor and multi-instrumentalist who assimilates and transforms ideas across musical genres, MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey joins Rome Prize-winning composer Paula Matthusen for an improvisatory duo performance (screening July 26). 'An extraordinary talent who can see across the entire musical landscape' (New Yorker), Sorey has also been commissioned to write a new work for premiere by the winner of the Solo Piano Competition.

Similarly, the winners of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition will premiere a new commission from 2021 Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner Carlos Simon, whose work combines the influences of jazz, gospel and neo-Romanticism.

Chamber Music: Opening Night Gala, x2 Series and more

This season's annual benefit is the Opening Night Gala: 'Return to Miraflores' (July 10), which honors Emmy Award winner, two-time Grammy nominee, Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and Academy alumnus Richard O'Neill (1998 & 1999), the newest member of the longtime resident Takács Quartet. The first string quartet to be inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, the Takács performs in the gala alongside tenor alumnus Ben Bliss (2012) and pianists Jeremy Denk, Conor Hanick and Nino Sanikidze (2001 & 2002).

Summer also sees the launch of the Academy's new x2 Series, in which fellows and their mentors perform side by side. The series will include works by contemporary composers Carlos Simon, Christopher Cerrone and Jessie Montgomery, as well as the world premiere of Oiseaux Tristes by Georgina Derbez. Featuring star faculty artists including Glenn Dicterow, former Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and Alan Stepansky, former Principal Cellist of the Boston Pops, four of the seven programs will welcome in-person audiences at Hahn Hall, while others will be available online. The Takács Quartet and Jeremy Denk will also perform with the fellows in special recitals in Hahn Hall.

Competitions and public masterclasses

One of the most popular events of the summer season, the Marilyn Horne Song Competition (Aug 6) is a showcase for Academy singers and vocal pianists, who compete for the Regina Roney Award, a cash prize and international recital tour. Chosen by a jury led by Honorary Voice Program Director Marilyn Horne (1953), past winners include John Osborn (1997), Susanna Phillips (2002, 2003), Isabel Leonard (2005), and Nadine Sierra (2007). This year's winners will premiere a new commission from composer Carlos Simon (see above). Likewise, the Academy's Duo Competition: Instrumental & Collaborative Piano (Aug 4) sees instrumental fellows pair up with collaborative pianists to compete for substantial cash prizes and a duo recital tour, and the Solo Piano Competition (July 28) sees piano fellows compete for the Luria Foundation Award, a cash prize and an international recital tour. Mosher Guest Artists Conrad Tao and Tyshawn Sorey have been commissioned to write new works for the winners of each competition, respectively (see above).

The masterclass is one of the hallmarks of the Music Academy experience. All fellows participate in the Music Academy's extensive masterclass program, which is designed to complement individual private instruction, and 2019's masterclass series was attended by more than 10,000 guests. Over the course of this summer's festival, 50 public masterclasses will be presented by faculty and guest artists in the voice, solo piano, and instrumental series, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at the process of preparing for performance.

Venues

The Music Academy of the West's fellows, faculty and guest artists perform at its scenic ocean-side campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara, including the historic 1,500-seat Granada Theatre. Known as Miraflores, the Academy's nine-acre campus was originally the estate of John Percival Jefferson. Its spectacular grounds and gardens create a serene place for visitors to stroll and relax before performances in the intimate Hahn Hall, which the Santa Barbara Independent calls an 'ultra-luxurious jewel-box venue,' and the Los Angeles Times describes as the 'centerpiece of the West Coast's elite summer music academy, hidden away in a plush neighborhood of Montecito, a block from a glorious coastline. … With 350 seats, it is perfect for chamber music and recitals. The acoustics are unobtrusive; nothing gets between music and the ear.' Additional campus venues include Lehmann Hall, named for founder Lotte Lehmann.

Ticket information

For health and safety, all tickets for the Summer Festival will be digital, emailed to view and display upon entry on mobile phones, or printed at home. Capacity has been reduced and socially distanced seating will be possible at every venue. Audiences are encouraged to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to attending Music Academy events, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the California Department of Health, and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. Everyone is welcome to choose to wear a mask at Music Academy events at any time. Patrons are asked to follow the current guidelines from the CDC regarding masks indoors for unvaccinated adults and children.
