February Volunteer Spotlight: Marcie

For the last few months, we've been highlighting some of our stellar Bike New York volunteers. We're grateful to have a team of supporters that care just as much about our mission as we do, and February's volunteer spotlight is a perfect example of that. Introducing… Marcie!

Marcie has been an enthusiastic volunteer with our Learn to Ride classes since 2019, and she marshals for Bike New York events, like the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.

Speaking of the TDFBBT, Marcie took the selfie on right at the 2019 Tour! From Marcie, "It was a very cold 40 degrees and rainy, which I'm sure all riders remember. That was the selfie I took while doing a course marshall shift along the FDR, trying (and failing) to stay warm and dry. As a roadway engineer, it was fun to spend the day in/on the road as it's normally so packed with cars. But my hopes of finishing the course after my shift did not come true - I took a long, hot shower and got an order of pho to warm up. Next time I volunteer I'll definitely finish the ride though!" Our dedicated volunteers, like Marcie, were true heroes that day.

Marcie's favorite part about being a bike educator is 'when a new rider successfully takes their first lap, pedaling with confidence. Seeing it click for the adults and the broad smile on each face as they bike around is always a momentous occasion.' Volunteering at Bike New York, she says, "means giving as many New Yorkers as possible a chance to learn the joy of biking. Biking has given me so much in my life and I'm proud to be a part of each student's journey to bring biking into theirs. I get a chance to help them get comfortable on a bike and encourage them to keep pedaling!"

We can't thank Marcie enough for her dedication to getting more New Yorkers on bicycles. When she isn't volunteering her time at Bike New York events and education programs, you can find her biking to work via the Hudson River Greenway.

P.S. Marcie's favorite spots to learn how to ride a bicycle are Inwood Hill Park (great for conquering hills!) and Randall's Island
