Melina Mera ’24 Awarded Fulbright Scholarship

JCU's Fulbright Advisor and Chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dr. Yuh-Cherng Chai, says Mera's determination led to earning the scholarship. "Melina's journey at JCU represents an inspiring story of our students' quality and achievements. Her selection for the Fulbright scholarship not only highlights her outstanding abilities but also reflects positively on our institution," he says. "This accomplishment can serve as a compelling narrative for prospective students and parents interested in the quality of education and opportunities offered at JCU."

Mera, whose father's side of her family is from Ecuador, has been actively involved with several organizations during her four years at John Carroll. The Arrupe Scholar served as President of the Latin American Student Association (LASA), an immigration intern for Campus Ministry, and a Residence Assistant for the Office of Residence Life.

Mera's involvement in the Arrupe program has been transformative, fueling her passion for servant leadership and social justice. Her senior project, a pen-pal program for the Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC) in Cleveland, Ohio, is a testament to her dedication. The Bridge Beyond Bars initiative pairs JCU students with soon-to-be-reintegrated inmates. The program aims to facilitate a smoother transition back into society through shared experiences and correspondence.

Following her Fulbright teaching assistantship in Spain, Mera will head to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for social justice. She's taking a year of service through the St. Joseph Worker Program, working with Homeboy Industries, a gang rehabilitation and re-entry program. Mera secured her Homeboy position before learning she also earned a Fulbright and could postpone her internship for a year while in Spain.

Mera plans to enroll in graduate school after her two postgraduate internships. She's set on earning a master's degree in social work, which will prepare her for a career as a licensed, social worker.
