Merseyrail cleaners demonstration

Merseyrail Safe Travel is Clean Travel - Take cleaning In-House Demonstration Saturday 18th September.

RAIL UNION RMT announced today that Merseyrail cleaners will be demonstrating this Saturday 18th September at Liverpool Central Station from 10.30 to 12.30.

The demonstration is calling for cleaning to be taken out of the hands of contractors and brought in-house.

Outsourced Merseyrail cleaners employed by privateers Mitie have been engaged in a long fight against poverty pay and for a Real Living Wage.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said:

'All over the country RMT is building campaigns to bring to an end the outsourcing of cleaning.

'Outsourcing is a failed political dogma that has brought with it profiteering and exploitation in this essential service. Conditions for these workers will never properly improve until they are brought in-house.

'The Covid pandemic has proven beyond any doubt the crucial role of cleaners, who are frontline workers in the transport industry, and public sympathy for their cause is growing.

'Merseyrail cleaners are essential workers who deserve a real living wage and the union will be backing them all the way until they get it.'
