Mersin and Reyer Venezia get onto the front foot with first-leg Round of 8 wins

MUNICH (EuroCup Women) - Mersin and Reyer Venezia are in a strong position to reach the Quarter Finals of EuroCup Women after they both racked up impressive Round of 8 first-leg victories.

Mersin had looked in real trouble during their home clash against Flammes Carolo Basket, when the French visitors powered their way into a 35-26 lead heading to the locker room. However, propelled by a stellar double-double from Krystal Thomas, they completed an 18-point turnaround to ride out 80-71 winners.

Thomas led the way with 19 points and 14 boards, with Serbian national team guard Sasa Cado showing her defensive prowess with 5 steals, in addition to a smart shooting effort that returned 18 points.

Fresh from a thrilling Slovak Cup Final triumph last weekend, Good Angels Kosice were looking for the feel good factor to continue. Italian outfit Reyer Venezia had other ideas and the home side were in a rather deep hole when trailing by 19 at the interval.

Unlike Mersin, there was no major comeback for Kosice as they eventually crashed 89-68. Naturalized Romania standout Ashley Walker excelled with a scorching 19 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for the winning side, with Riquna Williams contributing a team-high 21 points.
