Mather, CA. - The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Metro Fire or the District) will conduct structural firefighter training at 9501 Folsom Blvd tomorrow (July 11) and Sunday (July 15) near Butterfield Way. Numerous Metro Fire personnel will perform evolutions at the drill site which will include live fire scenarios. Beginning at 0800, the training will focus on fire behavior and suppression techniques and tactics.
Efficient and safe firefighting requires training in the same conditions encountered during emergency response. The conditions experienced by District personnel in this training will be similar to those faced during structural fires in residential and light commercial buildings, but due to control and safety mechanisms implemented by the Metro Fire Training Division multiple burns and training evaluations will be able to occur in this real world environment.
Community members in the area will see and smell smoke coming from the site but should not be alarmed. Nearby residents and businesses have been notified by District personnel and demolition permits have been coordinated with the County of Sacramento and the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District. Local law enforcement has been advised and will be available to assist with any traffic concerns that arise on Folsom Blvd.
Metro Fire is grateful to the St. George Melkite Greek - Catholic Church for the generosity in donating structures on their site that were to be demolished for this training opportunity. Community partnerships such as this is paramount to our priority mission at Metro Fire to provide safe and efficient emergency response throughout our District.
Media interested in attending this burn are urged to call Captain/PIO Chris Vestal at (916) 859-4589 for further information to schedule and ensure the best possible visual opportunities.
