Fire Station Alerting

Years ago, when firefighters were called upon to respond to emergencies, they were alerted by Bells and sirens. We have come a long way since then with computers and technology. In 2021, The Cathedral City City Council approved a new alerting system built by US Digital Designs to be installed in all three fire stations.
When the public experiences an emergency, it has been well established that people dial 911 for help. This process, which seems very simple, has a complex routing process that ultimately culminates in a phone call to our dispatchers. The way our new alerting system operates, it begins when the phone call to 911 is picked up. The Police dispatcher will immediately ask the caller what type of emergency they are experiencing. As soon as the caller identifies that they are in need of the Fire Department, some very basic information is asked for and is verified. As soon as the dispatcher verifies the address and type of call, they can enter a key that initiates an automatic dispatch from a computer-generated voice, which will alert the closest available fire engine and/or ambulance. This is done simultaneously while the dispatcher is still on the phone with the caller saving valuable dispatch time.
The system consists of several speakers in the fire stations that convey an automated dispatch. The speakers have low-intensity LED lighting built-in, which lights the way to the fire apparatus room during the night. This alerting system also incorporates a low-intensity Heart Saver Tone which is an audible alarm that reduces some of the physical responses that the old bells used to cause. When the old alerts came in, the physical response to the alarm would result in a substantial increase in heart rate of the responders. Studies show that the cumulative damage of bells in the fire station can cause a substantial release of adrenalin into the bloodstream of the responders. Throughout the station there are several lighted message boards that indicate the call information and address to alleviate anyone from having to write down the information, again saving time. When the firefighter gets into their protective gear and place their seat belts on in the engines, all updated incident information will be available on a Mobile Data Computer inside the fire units.
This new system is designed to get the firefighters responding in an efficient and healthy way and to reduce the amount of time it takes for us to respond to the incident. Cathedral City Fire Department is always looking for innovative ways to increase our service quality to you.
