Holocaust remembrance events in Vilnius and Kaunas

On 24-25 November, delegations from Germany, Austria, and Poland will be visiting Vilnius and Kaunas to attend events dedicated to the commemoration of the five thousand Jews from Berlin, Munich, Vienna, and Wroclaw killed in the Ninth Fort of Kaunas 80 years ago.
On 25 November, a commemoration ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and a discussion on the Holocaust remembrance will be held at the Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum (73 Žemaičių plentas). The commemoration will begin at 10:00 with a wreath-laying ceremony, at 10:15 there will be a guided tour of the Ninth Fort Museum, at 11:15 Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Gabrielė Žaidytė will open a round table discussion on behalf of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, and at 11:20 a round table discussion with historians and delegations from Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Wroclaw will start.
On 25 November at 20:00, a remembrance evening will be hosted at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (4 Cathedral Square), with a concert by Chordos string quartet featuring rare works by Jewish composers. Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė is to take part in the event.
During the visit, the foreign delegations will also meet with Deputy Foreign Minister Mantas Adomėnas. Office of the Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum, Moses Mendelssohn Foundation (Germany), and the German Embassy in Lithuania are organising the event.
On 25 and 28 November 1941, in the Ninth Fort of Kaunas the Nazis and their local collaborators killed about five thousand Jews transported from Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Wroclaw. In total, about 50,000 Lithuanian and foreign Jews were killed in the Ninth Fort of Kaunas. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Holocaust in Lithuania.
