Minister Hagiuda Holds Meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

On May 18, 2022, Mr. Hagiuda Koichi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). They confirmed to continue to work closely together, including on the review of the safety aspects of ALPS treated water, and exchanged views on further strengthening cooperation between the IAEA and the government of Japan.

On May 18, 2022, Minister Hagiuda held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the IAEA for its cooperation on the review of the safety aspects of ALPS treated water and for its great support, including transparent communication to the international community on the handling of ALPS treated water, and reiterated his request for continuous dissemination of information. He also expressed his commitment to enhance the cooperation between Japan and the IAEA.

Mr. Grossi stated that he was satisfied with the result of the IAEA review on the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea with international experts rigorously conducted in February 2022, and that the IAEA's review enables people around the world to have confidence that the water discharge is carried out without harming public health or the environment.

Furthermore, both sides had a positive discussion on the current status and future initiatives regarding human resource development and dissemination of information toward the continuous use of nuclear energy. The Minister also stated that Japan will contribute 1 million euros this fiscal year to the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme in order to support the development of female researchers in science and engineering, and Mr. Grossi showed his appreciation to that

Both sides agreed to continue discussions to realize cooperation between the IAEA and the government of Japan.
