Mexico and Colombia begin a new era of cooperation

Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller and Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met today in Bogotá with Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez, the new president and vice president of Colombia.

The Mexican delegation conveyed to President Petro and Vice President Márquez the warm greetings of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and an invitation to visit Mexico in the near future.

During the meeting held at the presidential palace, Casa de Nariño, the Mexican and Colombian officials discussed the possibilities for greater cooperation in social development, health, regional integration, security and energy.

They look forward to a new era of cooperation between the two countries.

"The Mexican people and the Colombian people can be key to Latin American unity, a great voice in the universe that allows our cultures, our blood, our struggles, to succeed, to advance. We can be what Vasconcelos called 'the cosmic race,' 'the unity of blood in the world,'" said President Petro.

Foreign Secretary Ebrard said: "President Petro represents a new era, new ideas, there is much similarity with Mexico and we think he is going to make big changes in Colombia, which is of interest to all of Latin America."

Dr. Gutiérrez Müller delivered to President Gustavo Petro a personal letter from President López Obrador, as well as three documents from the historical archive related to recognition of Colombia's independence and the first political, economic and social treaties between 1822 and 1823, historical testimony of the relationship between the two nations.

Foreign Secretary Ebrard presented President Petro with the staffs of command of the indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples of Mexico as a symbol of unity and support between both peoples.

Foreign Secretary Ebrard meets with business executives

In Bogotá, Foreign Secretary Ebrard also met with Mexican business executives with investments in Colombia, with whom he agreed to promote more trade and reciprocal investments between the two countries.

Representatives from Claro, Cemex, Femsa, the Colombo-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and Integration, Bimbo and Volaris, among others, participated in the meeting, highlighting current investment projects in various sectors and new business opportunities, trade and investment under the free trade agreement that has been in force for 26 years and the Pacific Alliance Protocol.

Currently, Mexico is Colombia's second-ranked trading partner in the region and the sixth largest investor in the country. Colombia ranks as the eleventh largest investor in Mexico.
