Mr Minister, colleagues,
I am delighted to make your acquaintance. Thank you for your hospitality.
I would like to use this opportunity to once again congratulate you, this time personally, on your appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.
Our countries are long-standing partners. Russia has always had warm feelings towards Sri Lanka and has supported its striving to uphold its national interests by means of an independent policy based on international law. Our relations have been traditionally developing on the principles of trust, respect and equality.
We maintain a very good, intensive and stable dialogue, including at the top level. Our presidents met four times over the past 20 years, the last time on the sidelines of the fifth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) held in Tajikistan in June 2019.
Our foreign ministries have good relations as well. I am honoured to invite you to make a visit to Russia.
We are also satisfied with the work of the Russian-Lankan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
Regular contacts between our parliaments and ministries, including defence ministries, serve to promote our relations in the interests of our nations.
