Edison High School students will join with community members to dedicate a new peace garden to Ali Shabazz, a Caltrans civil engineer, imam and beloved community leader who died in a car accident in 2022 while driving to a work site. The garden, planted by students in March, provides a space for reflection and to celebrate the diversity of Edison and the southwest Fresno community.

Student body president Matthew Pitcher, who initiated the project, worked with district officials, non-profit organizations and community members to design the garden and secure donations. Local nurseries donated trees and plants with other organizations, including the West Fresno Family Resource Center, donating supplies and materials. Donors to the project included Gazebo Gardens, Educational Employees Credit Union, North Fresno Rotary and Assemblyman Dr. Joaquin Arambula, an Edison alum.

"I am proud of our students for their work on this project from start to finish and through this dedication, honoring an important member of our southwest community and our city who we lost too soon," said Superintendent Bob Nelson.
