AHN's Dr. Susan Manzi Elected to Mastership from the American College of Physicians

PITTSBURGH - Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is pleased to announce that the American College of Physicians (ACP) has elected Susan Manzi, MD, MPH, MACP, to Mastership; the highest honor the ACP can bestow upon its members.

Regarded as a pioneer in the field of rheumatology, Dr. Manzi has played a critical role in advancing quality, innovation and best practices that have significantly improved the treatment of patients with autoimmune illnesses. She cares for patients from around the world who travel to the AHN Autoimmunity Institute seeking her expertise in the diagnosis and management of hard-to-treat autoimmune conditions.

Dr. Manzi and her colleagues hold several patents for methods of identifying and monitoring autoimmune diseases, particularly lupus. Most notably, using a specialized technology known as CB-CAPs or 'Cell-Bound Complement Activation Products,' Dr. Manzi and team designed a first-of-its-kind blood test to help clinicians diagnose lupus with greater ease and accuracy.

She currently serves as the chair of the AHN Medicine Institute, director of the AHN Autoimmunity Institute's Lupus Center of Excellence and medical director for the Lupus Foundation of America's board of directors. She has served on advisory boards for the FDA and more than 20 pharmaceutical and biotech companies and has chaired or served on numerous NIH study sections and data safety monitoring boards.

The ACP is the largest medical specialty organization in the world. Each year, it confers Mastership on a select few candidates who are highly accomplished ACP fellows. They are distinguished by their integrity and the significance of their contributions to medicine and advancing patient care.

"Dr. Manzi has long been an inspiration to her peers and colleagues, but there is none more appreciative of her hard work and dedication than the people living with autoimmune diseases whom she has cared for and/or impacted through her breakthrough research. Further, her leadership has advanced the AHN Medicine Institute as a destination for leading edge care across a range of medical disciplines," said Donald Whiting, MD, chief medical officer, AHN. "We applaud Dr. Manzi for this prestigious honor of which she could not be more deserving."

Dr. Manzi was inducted at the ACP's Convocation Ceremony held last month in Boston. To learn more, visit www.acponline.org.
