DOMINICA RECEIVES NEW FRENCH AMBASSADOR

His Excellency Jacques Henry Heuls presented his credentials to President of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin on September 20, 2021 and is now the new French Ambassador to Dominica.

President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin, stated that the Government of Dominica and the Republic of France have maintained very friendly and fruitful relations.

"I am pleased to note that at the top of your Government's agenda is the development of sub-regional cooperation between the Eastern Caribbean States and the French territories of the Caribbean namely Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Martin and St. Barthélemy and to engender a closer and more functional cooperation between Dominica and the French territories, Martinique and Guadeloupe, our immediate neighbors. I am further pleased to note your commitment to further strengthen relations and deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas of security and defense, climate change, green energy, waste management smart digitalization, water treatment, culture, education, trade, tourism and to strive to enhance areas of cooperation between Dominica and the European Union," President Savarin stated.

President Savarin noted that these areas of focus will greatly assist Dominica in managing the many challenges and difficulties faced as the country charts a path to sustainable development.

"Your Excellency as rightly indicated by you will have a collective responsibility to combat matters of major concerns such as threats to regional security, the disastrous effects of climate change and the covid-9 pandemic which put the well-being of our people and the entire world at risk. The illicit trade of drugs, small arms and human smuggling are also areas of concern. We therefore move to further strengthen our bilateral relations, as well as multilaterally, and to continue to collaborate in our efforts to fight against these destructive phenomena which threaten both our security and our sustainable growth and development," H.E. Savarin noted.

The President went on to say that since the establishment of diplomatic relations with the French Republic in 1979, Dominica has benefitted and continues to benefit from significant assistance offered by the French Government.

"Dominica has benefitted and continues to benefit from significant assistance of your Government particularly in the areas of health, tourism, agriculture, education, and most importantly in the exploration of geothermal energy," President Savarin added.

Ambassador Jacques-Henry Heuls commended the Government of Dominica on its management of covid-19 since Dominica recorded its first case.

"First of all I would like in these covid times to acknowledge the professionalism and efficiency of your political and health authorities who have permitted your island to manage the consequences of the pandemic thanks to a firm and early lockdown and an abundance of precaution. Even with the recent outburst of the fourth wave of the virus, your authorities managed to keep it under control," Ambassador Heuls stated.

The French Ambassador went on to express his hopes of developing a sub-regional cooperation between the Eastern Caribbean states and the French territories of the Caribbean.

"Dominica is ideally located between Guadeloupe and Martinique with special and historical affinities towards Guadeloupe and it is time that Martinique and Guadeloupe be more connected to Dominica's economical, cultural and educational sectors. I will do my best to improve at all levels and in all areas a preparation and understanding between all factors," H.E Heuls added.
