Nuke plant production almost unaffected by hot weather -Zronek

Dukovany, South Moravia, Aug 17 (CTK) - Hot summer days have virtually no impact on power generation by the nuclear power plants Dukovany and Temelin, southern Bohemia, Bohdan Zronek, a board member and head of the nuclear energy division of energy group CEZ, said in a press release today.

The output difference in summer and winter is up to 2 percent, he added.

There is no need to lower the units' output because of high outside temperatures, Zronek said.

"Both our nuclear plants are using the cooling towers," he said.

Unlike some foreign nuclear plants, Dukovany and Temelin are not dependent on any outside water sources, Zronek said.

Dukovany has generated nine terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity so far this year, an equivalent of a six-month consumption of all Czech households, according to CEZ. It is 12,000 megawatt hours (MWh) more of electricity yr/yr.

Out of Dukovany's four unit shutdowns scheduled for this year, three have already taken place and were 3.3 days shorter in annual terms, which is also a result of modernisation projects and other improvements, said Dukovany head Roman Havlin.

The optimisation of the cooling towers operation is expected to raise production by over 15,000 MWh, he added.

Temelin's two units have produced 9.8 TWh of electricity so far this year. Given the measures taken in the past few years to raise the output, the current summer output corresponds to the winter output a few years ago, said Temelin head Jan Kruml. Unit 2 is currently out of operation in line with the schedule over replacement of fuel assemblies.

Dukovany and Temelin produced 30.73 TWh of electricity last year, with Temelin generating 15.86 TWh and Dukovany 14.87 TWh.
