Ashley Hinson Backs Yet Another Scheme That Would Cut Social Security and Medicare

Since starting her tenure in Congress only a year and a half ago, Rep. Ashley Hinson has made one goal a clear priority: weakening Social Security and Medicare.

Shortly after winning election and before she had even taken office, Hinson declared herself "open" to raising the retirement age for Social Security, saying "I think it's my job now to go in and try to make some of those tough decisions."

Then, in April, she went further, declaring that Republicans were done "kicking the can down the road on this issue" and that they would be "making some tough decisions" about the future of Social Security if they took control of Congress. Hinson even revealed that "tough decisions" about Social Security were "one of the things we're talking about" behind closed doors in Washington.

Last week, Hinson was at it again. In a telephone town hall, Hinson declared her support for a so-called "balanced budget amendment" to the Constitution, which would almost certainly force benefit cuts for Iowa seniors on Social Security or Medicare. Even one of the Republican architects of the last balanced budgets passed by Congress called such a measure "madness."

"For all her attempts to mislead Iowans about her vote against bipartisan infrastructure investments, Ashley Hinson is crystal clear about her determination to cut Iowa seniors' hard-earned Social Security and Medicare benefits," said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. "This is now the third time since coming to Congress that Hinson has floated an extreme plan to cut these critical programs on which more than 500,000 Iowans rely. Hinson's priorities are out of touch with Iowa seniors and she can't be trusted to fight for them in Washington."
