Winter cereals field day will be April 30 in Thrall

Variety tours, results on wheat, oats, barley on the agenda

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a winter cereals field day at the Stiles Farm Foundation in Thrall on April 30.

The free event begins with in-person registration and breakfast tacos at 8:30 a.m. at the complex headquarters, 5700 Farm-to-Market Road 1063. The in-field portion of the program begins at 9 a.m.

Registration is available on-site or pre-register by calling the AgriLife Extension office in Williamson County at 512-943-3300 or at https://tx.ag/WinterCerealFieldDay2024.

One general Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit will be available for field day participants.

Program agenda

The field day will feature a tour of the latest winter cereal varieties led by Brandon Gerrish, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist, state small grains specialist and assistant professor in the Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.

There will be 20 hard red winter wheat and 43 soft red winter wheat varieties available for viewing, as well as discussions on previous yield performance, disease and insect resistance ratings, and new varieties.

Alternative small grains, including two oat, one barley and one triticale variety, will also be viewed. The results of regional multi-species forage trials will be highlighted.
