Our people: The story of Jane Muringen, from Rosebel

Our people: The story of Jane Muringen, from Rosebel

Jane Muringen is the Laundry Supervisor at IAMGOLD's Rosebel Gold Mines (RGM). She started working at the site 25 years ago, when it was owned by Golden Star, as an employee in the laundry department. 'When the company changed into IAMGOLD, I kept working in the same department. Right from the beginning up until now, I have proudly worked in the laundry department,' says Muringen.

Before the laundry supervisor started working with IAMGOLD, she autonomously worked with the miners in Suriname. 'I cooked at home and sold food and all kinds of things to the gold miners in the gold fields,' she recalls. When Golden Star visited the area and started hiring people for the laundry department, she seized the opportunity.

Jane has been a go-getter and, over the years, has set herself up as an inquisitive employee who wanted to grow. 'After a few years, based on my experience and achievements, I became a group leader. After that, I followed a lot of different courses before being promoted to supervisor years later. I still hold the position to this day.'

Memories both joyful and tearful

'There were pleasant and less enjoyable moments,' says Jane looking back over the past 25 years of service. 'One of the good ones was when we had to go off-site to a different location for the training sessions. Because of this, I've seen a lot of places and got to know a lot of people.' As for an unhappy moment, she mentions when one of her managers had to leave. 'We, at the laundry, had a very good relationship with him. He was always there for us and was always searching for a solution to our problems. A hat unu!' (Meaning: It really hurts us.)

Message to Rosebel
Jane has four more years at IAMGOLD before retirement and she wanted to leave a message for her colleagues and employees at Rosebel: 'If you love your job, you'll do it well.'
