6 of the best...Homes for buyers looking to downsize

The Covid-19 pandemic saw many buyers focused on the 'race for space' - going in search of larger properties with ample room to work from home and spend time outdoors.

While that trend continues - particularly at the higher end of the market - not everyone wants the responsibility of owning a bigger home and the associated costs that may well bring in terms of ongoing upkeep and maintenance.

For those seeking a more manageable property in a convenient location - closer to amenities or nearer to family and friends for example - downsizing remains a popular option. Others may be hoping to release equity for retirement or to help their children onto the housing ladder.

Our residential research team recently identified the best places for downsizers to move to according to a range of factors including affordability, healthcare facilities, proximity to national parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and travel times to local town centres, food shops and hospitals.

Choosing when to downsize can be an understandably difficult decision - after all, very often it means selling a much-loved family home with countless fond memories. But larger homes in country locations remain in high demand and it is still a good time to sell, especially if your home is sensibly priced.

From a character cottage with stylish interiors and a Grade II listed home in the Stour Valley, through to a former chapel and contemporary apartments - featured here is a selection of properties with downsizer appeal.
