Women’s Soccer picked to finish second in HCAC

CARMEL, Indiana -- The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team is again expected to be among the top teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC), as decided by the pre-season coaches poll. The Lions 75 points were only one point behind pre-season favorite the Panthers of Hanover College. The Lions and Panthers each received four of the possible nine first place votes, the final first place vote went to the Pioneers of Transylvania University who finished third in the poll.

The Lions and Panthers look to compete again for the HCAC crown as they did a season ago. The teams split a pair of matchups last season, with each team winning on the opposing teams home field. During the regular season the Panthers defeated the Lions in a 2-1 double-overtime thriller on Schueler Field. That win all but clinched the regular season HCAC Championship for the Pioneers, allowing them to host the HCAC Tournament Championship. The Lions entered the pitch that day with revenge on their mind, and took control of the action from the opening whistle. The Lions dominated the Panthers enroute to a 3-0 victory, claiming the HCAC's automatic bid in the NCAA DIII National Tournament.

The Lions will be led in 2019 by a senior class thats five players strong. Stefanie Autenrieb (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), the reigning HCAC Defensive Player of the Year, will likely again be among the best players in the conference. Senior Paige Mersmann (Florence, Ky./Boone Co.) a second team All-HCAC selection returns as well, the rest of the senior class is Madeline Rechel (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison), Jami Sponaugle (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin), and Cheyenne Dunseith (Georgetown, Ohio/Georgetown). They will also welcome back a pair of second team All-HCAC selections in would-be Juniors Jodie Weimer (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) and Alex Hines (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills).

Autenrieb, Mersmann and Rechel have been named as the Lions players to watch during the 2019 season.

On August 31st the Lions will begin their 2019 campaign by welcoming Trine to Schueler Field, the game is scheduled to get underway at 4:30 PM. Tune into all season for your Lions women's soccer coverage.
