Goods transport with significant increases by road, sea and rail, and levels above those recorded in the same period of 2019

Summary

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, national airports handled around 4 million passengers. Compared to the same period of 2019, there was a decrease of 76.0% (-86.8% in Q1 2021).

By train and by metro, 18.9 and 20.3 million passengers were transported, respectively. These values represent reductions of 34.6% and 53.3% respectively, compared to the same period of 2019 (-51.4% and -65.6% in Q1 2021).

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, the transport of passengers by inland waterways registered an increase of 97.1% compared to the Q2 2020 (-58.8% in the Q1 2021), reaching 3.0 million passengers and a reduction of 45.5% compared to Q2 2019, still far from COVID-19 pre-pandemic values.

The transport of goods increased in all modes of transport compared to the same period of 2020, with levels above those recorded in the same period of 2019, except for air transport. By air, the increase compared to Q2 2020 was more significant (+108.3%; -21.7% in Q1 2021), but still with a 11.2% reduction vis-à-vis the Q2 2019. By rail there were increases of 24.0% compared to the same period of 2020 (-2.4% in Q1 2021) and +6.4% compared to the same period of 2019. By sea there was an increase of 29.7% compared to the Q2 2020 (-3.6% in the Q1 2021), also registering a slight increase in relation to the Q2 2019 (+0.4%). Road transport grew 39.3% compared to Q2 2020 (+7.5% in Q1 2021) having also increased compared to Q2 2019 (+3.1%).
