A basic skin care routine is essential for healthy, glowing skin. Our skin is biologically designed to protect itself from harm during the day and repair itself at night. Still, with the heightened influx of free radicals in the environment, a greater threat from sun exposure, and all the cosmetics we use, our skin needs more help these days. CBD skin care products are designed with your skin's needs in mind. Today, we'll cover your daily skin care routine for all types of skin so you can put your best face forward. We'll also make some CBD product recommendations by skin type.
For all skin care routines, the ordering of the products is the same. So, let's establish that before we get into the different types of skin care and how that applies to your skin type.
For each skin care routine, no matter your skin type, you'll perform your skin care routine twice a day, morning and night. Daytime skin care products and CBD skin care are designed with your skin's daytime activities in mind. They are focused on skin protection. Similarly, the nighttime skin care or CBD skin care products are designed with your skin's nighttime activities in mind to repair and restore your skin's natural balance.
Of course, choosing the products you use in your daily skin care routine depends on several things: your skin type, age, skin needs or sensitivities, personal preferences, and goals for your skin. Let's address what you'll need to know to choose the best skin care products for your skin.
Healthline has a great article that details how to determine your skin type, which you can do for yourself at home. You can try their quick 30-minute method or the traditional one:
You may be surprised at your skin type. Many people think their skin is oily, for example, when it may not be. Or they may not realize their skin is naturally dry. It's hard to tell sometimes because we put so many things on our skin, affecting our skin's natural balance. Skin type is based on the natural sebum (oil) production of your skin. General skin types are normal, oily, dry, and combination. Then, more specialized skin types address specific skin tendencies like sensitivity, aging, and maturity, acneic, or uneven textured skin.
For this article, we won't get into skin conditions that can sometimes require the expert knowledge of a dermatologist. We'll focus on the four main skin types, and for anything that requires further care, we recommend you speak with a dermatologist for advice and care options.
After you determine your skin type, you'll need to choose products best suited for your type of skin. Some skin care lines make it simple by putting the skin type right on the label, but these are general guidelines. If you understand what works best for each skin type, you can choose the best skin care for your skin.
Skin produces less sebum than normal. Can appear or feel tight. Can have areas of flaking or redness.
Choose products that:
Most importantly, a really good night cream is essential for these skin types.
Skin produces excess oils and may appear shiny. Makeup may rub off easily on these types of skin.
Choose products that:
Skin has dry patches (usually on cheeks) and oilier areas, typically in the "T-zone," including the forehead, nose, chin.
Choose products that:
Skin has no noticeable dryness or extra oil. Skin is supple and appears normal.
Choose products that:
Your primary skin type is only part of the equation. Ask yourself these questions:
Answering these questions can help you determine what types of specialty skin care products you may need for your skin. It may influence the frequency of other products you are using or require that you use specialized skin care products you get from your dermatologist.
For any skin care routine, you'll want to follow specific steps, in order, for the best benefit to your skin. Here are the steps and how you do each one.
Wet the face with tepid water and apply a small amount of your cleanser to your face. Using gentle, circular motions, work the cleanser on your skin, avoiding the eye area. Rinse carefully with your eyes closed until your skin feels smooth and cleanser-free. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
Tip: If your skin feels very tight and dry after cleansing or appears red or irritated, then the cleanser could be too powerful for your skin. Try a gentler formula.
Skin care masks help keep your pores clean and refined, polish the texture of your skin, and prepare your skin for moisturizer. Most skin care masks are for weekly use, but some are more gentle and can be used more frequently. Apply the mask to dry skin with your fingertips in gentle strokes, avoiding the eye area. Follow the packaging instructions for how long to allow the mask to dry. Rinse well with tepid water and pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
Some masks come in a sheet form. For these, you will arrange the mask onto your dry face, carefully placing the eye holes over your eyes. Follow the packaging instructions for how long to leave it on your face and whether or not you should rinse the product off after you remove the sheet.
For scrubs, gently apply a small amount of the product to your skin. Read the product instructions to see if your skin should be damp, wet, or dry when you apply the product-using gentle circular motions with the tips of your fingers, moving the product around on your skin. Avoid the eye area. Rinse with tepid water until all of the product is removed from your skin. Pat your face dry with a soft towel.
Toners help to refine your pores and remove any excess product or oils before applying your moisturizer. These can come in liquid form, which you can use with a soft cotton ball or in a spritz form. Do not rinse after toning.
Serums need to be applied before your moisturizer or night cream. They provide ingredients targeted at things like skin texture or tone, moisture balance, or providing anti-aging ingredients for your skin.
Apply a small amount to your face (usually only a few drops for serums) using the tips of your fingers and smooth the product over your skin with gentle sweeping motions. Avoid the eye area. Do not rinse off.
Moisturizers come in a wide variety of forms, weights, and strengths. There are daytime moisturizers that are more focused on protecting your skin (most contain sunscreen) and nighttime ones (called night creams) that target skin repair, collagen production, and nourishment for your skin.
Apply moisturizer in gentle sweeping motions and avoid the eye area. Do not rinse off.
There are specialized moisturizers for the eye area called eye creams, made with gentler formulas for the delicate eye area. You should pat on the product with the pads of your ring fingers under the eyes, around the brows, and upper lids.
If your daytime moisturizer does not contain sunscreen, you'll need to apply facial sunscreen. Apply the same way you would a moisturizer. Some sunscreens go on before your moisturizer and some after, but either way is ok. You can try it both ways to see if your regular moisturizer causes the sunscreen to "slip" when putting it on.
The most effective way is to use a daily moisturizer that already contains sunscreen formulated for everyday facial use. For extended periods in the sun, you will want a thicker sunscreen with a higher SPF. Here are some tips for applying thicker sunscreens for your outdoor fun in the sun.
We mentioned CBD skin care earlier in this article because we know how beneficial our skin care products can be for your skin, no matter what type of skin you have. They include ingredients that benefit your skin with calming care that skin just loves. If you have heard about CBD skin care and have always wanted to try it, here's a bit of what you need to know before choosing what products to try.
Without getting super-complex, your skin has endocannabinoid receptors that allow it to process CBD and other cannabinoids. CBD products use this natural bodily system to deliver benefits for your skin. While research is still ongoing, most people find CBD calming for the skin and moisturizing in a gentle and nourishing way. We may not know exactly why, but skin loves it!
