RMT responds as rail journeys fall to lowest levels since mid-nineteenth century

'While rail passenger numbers have plummeted the use of the private car is returning to pre-covid levels and to stop the coronavirus crisis accelerating the climate crisis we need new action to support public transport

'There has been welcome government support for the rail industry but more needs to be done, especially as some services such as Grand Central and Hull trains are teetering on the brink and the railway supply chain is now also shedding jobs.

'We now need urgent radical steps to support an eventual safe and sustainable return of passengers to the network, that includes making our railways more affordable, expanding capacity and ultimately managing the network as an essential public service in public ownership.'
