EMA reminds residents to take care in summer’s heat

Lawrence M. Walsh

JOLIET - With summer's heat upon us and as heat indexes top 90 and 100, the Will County Emergency Management Agency reminds residents to be cautious in the heat.

EMA Director Harold Damron says there are ways people can protect themselves when the mercury climbs.

Among those are:

  • Dressing appropriately for the conditions;
  • During extreme heat conditions take showers, keep hydrated and close curtains/shades,;
  • Avoid all unnecessary outdoor activities.

Damron said people who are homeless or do not have air conditioning during extreme heat should consider relocating to a friend or relative's residence.

They may also visit malls, movie theaters, libraries and similar facilities open to the public or visit a cooling center.

For a list of cooling centers, go to https://www.willcountyema.org/warmingcooling. Damron said to call ahead to ensure the facility is open.

EMA is under Will County Executive Larry Walsh's office.
