Board of Directors Spotlight: Barbara B. Pike, ICD.D

The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB) is governed by an independent Board of Directors, which is comprised of provincial and federal appointees and a Board Chair. The Board sets the CNSOPB's policies and programs through strategic, ethical and transparent lenses in the stewardship and regulation of offshore petroleum resources.

In addition to their valued contributions to our Board, our Board of Directors are active members in their communities and dedicate their time, resources and expertise to numerous organizations.

Barbara Pike has a strong background in energy, communications and business development. Born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Barbara attended Memorial University, where she studied Commerce. She began her career as a journalist and producer, working primarily for the CBC and The Canadian Press. Following a 20-year career in journalism, Barbara transitioned to the communications field. She worked with the Nova Scotia government and as the CNSOPB's Public Information and Environmental Coordinator before moving to the Atlantic Institute of Market Studies, first as the Director of Communications and then as Vice-President. Barbara then served as the founding CEO of The Maritimes Energy Association. She completed her ICD.D designation at the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto in 2020.

Barbara is a federally appointed Director, who joined the Board in 2017. She chairs our Social Responsibility Committee, which is responsible for overseeing our efforts to engage and educate our stakeholders to build trust and confidence in our regulatory role.

Barbara is a champion of growth and investment in Atlantic Canada. She is an active community volunteer with many interests and decades of work on numerous community not-for-profit Boards. In addition to the CNSOPB, she currently serves on the Board of Directors for Scotian Windfields Inc., ScWEB LP, Roswell Developments Inc., Community Foundation of Nova Scotia and Sail Canada.

Having previously worked at the CNSOPB as an employee, and now serving on the Board of Directors, is a 'full circle moment for me', says Barbara. 'Any energy project, whether renewable or non-renewable, needs a robust and transparent regulatory regime to ensure safe and environmentally responsible development. The CNSOPB has been providing that for 30 years in the Nova Scotia offshore.'

We thank Barbara for her contribution to our Board. For more information on Barbara, read her Board biography.
