RMT calls for rail to be taken into public ownership as delay repay claims soar by 17%.
Commenting on figures released today by the Office of Rail and Road, which show that passenger delay repay claims closed by train companies increased by 17% to 6.3 million last year, RMT Senior Assistant General Secretary Mick Lynch said:
'This massive increase in delay repay claims shows that passengers continue to be failed by our unreliable and fragmented private railways.
'The current system is not fit for purpose, and the Government knows this.
'Rather than continuing to bail out the private train companies with billions in public funds, the Government should be using this funding to take our railways into public ownership. This is the only way to achieve an affordable, accessible, reliable and sustainable railway that works for passengers.'
